Moscow’s Lefortovo Court is scheduled to consider the case of Paul Whelan, who stands accused of espionage, on Friday, August 23.

The investigation has requested prolonging Whelan’s detention until October 28.

Earlier Whelan’s lawyer Vladimir Zherebenkov told TASS: “The investigation is coming to the end, we expect to start familiarising ourselves with its materials in September.”

Whelan was detained in Moscow on December 28. If found guilty of espionage, the US Marine Corps veteran faces up to 20 years in prison.

The 49-year-old holds US, Canadian, UK and Irish citizenship.
