Driving Donkey Training (1st session)

Driving Donkey Training (1st session) Driving donkey training with Dixie! Dixie is a 5-year-old standard jennet in excellent health and has a great temperament.
This is only her 2nd training session with me and it's her first ground driving session! I think she did really well.
Well handled donkeys can be trained to drive fairly easily and without drama.
Dixie's number 1 problem is simply that she is not a forward-moving donkey. Although trained for riding she does not lead well and just has an all whoa, no-go attitude.
Part of this may be due to the last owners not riding her and her living quarters were small. There just wasn't a lot of movement in her life. Many times donkeys just get used to being inactive and they need to be trained in how good it feels to move again. They are made to move. Not much different from humans who get used to not exercising.

I started training her using the clicker and encouraging her to follow along at liberty which you can see in her clicker training video demo.
In this video, I'm again using the clicker as the marker to signal reward for forward-moving.
