The biggest news for international students last week was the UK government’s announcement that it will be bringing back the two-year post-study student work visa.
Reversing Theresa May’s abolition of the visa seven years ago, the new immigration route will be open to “international students who have successfully completed a course in any subject at undergraduate level or higher at a higher education provider with a track record of compliance, and have Tier 4 [student visa] leave at the point the route is introduced”. It’s a significant extension from the current four-month limit for bachelor or master’s graduates to look for work.

5 things to know about UK's post-study work visa rules:
1) The new post-study work visa route announced by the Boris Johnson government will allow Indian students to stay back in the United Kingdom for two years to find work after graduation. Currently, most international students pursuing bachelor's and master's degrees can stay and work for only four months and those at 27 universities on a pilot scheme get six months.
) "It is expected that students entering the UK in the 2020-21 academic year intake will be eligible for this route. It has been announced now so that universities, stakeholders and customers preparing for the next academic year are aware of this change and could feature this as part of the plans," British Deputy High Commissioner to India Jan Thompson said. At present, there are about 4.5 lakh international students a year studying in Britain which the government wants to take it to 6 lakh.
3) British Council India's director (North) Tom Birtwistle said the new graduate immigration route supports the ambitions of Indian students, who consider post-study work option as an important factor when making their choice of studying abroad.
4) The visa will be two years long and will be a separate visa, requiring a new application, including payment of a visa fee and immigration health surcharge, according to the new norms. The route is non-extendable and does not count towards settlement. However, graduates who find an appropriate job and meet the requirements will be able to switch into skilled work, which is a route to settlement.
5) Those who graduate and whose leave expires before the route is introduced will not be eligible for it, however, most of these students will have had no expectation of benefiting from such a route when they applied to study in the UK, according to the norms.
