Yesterday, the Jamaica Labour Party Education Fund donated One Million Five Hundred Thousand (1,500,000) to the University of the West Indies to assist students experiencing financial difficulties, particularly those at risk of being deregistered and barred from sitting their examinations. I made a further donation of One Million Jamaican Dollars (1,000,000) to the institution from my Positive Jamaica Foundation, because I identify with the struggles of university students. I too took a chance in going to university, not entirely sure how it would be funded and was also the beneficiary of a bursary while I was a student at UWI.
I was moved to make this donation by recent reports in the media concerning the extreme financial difficulties being faced by university students.
Though the Jamaica Labour Party is a political organization, we are more than just politics. We are a corporate entity with corporate social responsibilities.
For us education is a core principle and we want to demonstrate that we are prepared to invest in our students.
