Tory general election candidate suspended over alleged anti-Muslim language

Tory general election candidate suspended over alleged anti-Muslim language A Tory general election candidate has been suspended for allegedly using "anti-Muslim language" in the latest Islamophobia row to hit the party.  Conservative chiefs said .  But the deadline to remove her as candidate for Glasgow Central has expired - meaning she has no choice but to appear on the ballot paper on December 12.   Scottish Tory chiefs have not revealed what Ms Scarabello, who is fighting from a distant third place behind the SNP and Labour, is alleged to have said.  However, a spokesman for the Scottish Conservatives said: “We take allegations like this extremely seriously.  “There is no place in the Scottish Conservatives for anti-Muslim language, or any other form of racial or religious discrimination.  “As such, we have immediately suspended the candidate and the complaint will be thoroughly investigated.”  It is the latest in a string of scandals over alleged Islamophobia to hit the Tory party.  Anthony Browne, a Conservative candidate for South Cambridgeshire, made comments blaming immigrants for bringing germs and HIV to the UK and accused Muslims of having divided loyalties, according to The Guardian.   He is still standing despite Boris Johnson claiming the Tories had a "zero-tolerance" approach.  The Prime Minister today apologised for the "hurt and offence" that has been caused by Islamophobia within Conservative ranks.  He told reporters: "Obviously whenever we have an incident of anti-Semitism or Islamophobia or whatever in the Conservative Party, we take a zero-tolerance approach ... We have a one bounce and we deal with it approach to this."  But the Tory candidate for Luton South, Parvez Akhtar, said the PM must "unequivocally apologise for his comments about Muslim women".  He said the PM's comments comparing them to "letterboxes" had caused "hurt and anger" in the Muslim community.  He said he could "no longer remain silent as I would be complicit in the blatant discrimination which exists not only within the party towards individuals but also when it comes to the policy agenda".  The Muslim Council of Britain also demanded the Equalities and Human Rights Commission probe the Tories’ “deceit” over Islamophobia.   The body called for the watchdog - which is already investigating anti-Semitism in Labour - to look into the Conservative Party after saying Tories accused of Islamophobia were “secretly” restored to membership.   Meanwhile Lib Dem candidate Chuka Umunna claimed Boris Johnson should be thrown out of the Tories for showing prejudice himself.  He tweeted: “Boris Johnson says Tory party members guilty of Islamophobia and prejudice "are out first bounce" and will be ejected from the party.  “Clearly not - he is still a member.” Tory general election candidate suspended over alleged anti-Muslim language
