Pin Removal Following Wrist Surgery- Dr Steve Mora

Pin Removal Following Wrist Surgery- Dr Steve Mora Percutaneous Pinning is a common procedure that we do to treat distal radius (wrist) fractures. These fractures are common, especially in the elderly population following a fall on outstretched arms. It is especially common during the holidays.
The initial surgical procedure is done in the operating room. The pin removal is done in the office.
This particular fracture was quite severe. My patient sustained a 100% displaced and terribly angulated wrist fracture.
I treated the fracture with “closed reduction” which means I manipulated and pulled on the hand gently until the pieces lined up. Fortunately I was able to realign the fragments without having to make a big incision. Multiple pins were used in a crisscross pattern. Once the fracture is sufficiently healed the pins get pulled in the office. A cast is applied for the remainder of the treatment.
Fracture: Closed Angulated Distal Radius Fracture
Procedure: Closed Reduction Percutaneous Pinning.
Thank you to my patient who consented to video and to sharing.
