The initial surgical procedure is done in the operating room. The pin removal is done in the office.
This particular fracture was quite severe. My patient sustained a 100% displaced and terribly angulated wrist fracture.
I treated the fracture with “closed reduction” which means I manipulated and pulled on the hand gently until the pieces lined up. Fortunately I was able to realign the fragments without having to make a big incision. Multiple pins were used in a crisscross pattern. Once the fracture is sufficiently healed the pins get pulled in the office. A cast is applied for the remainder of the treatment.
Fracture: Closed Angulated Distal Radius Fracture
Procedure: Closed Reduction Percutaneous Pinning.
Thank you to my patient who consented to video and to sharing.
