Russian military vehicles arrived in Raqqa, the former stronghold of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL) in northern Syria carrying food and medical supplies to its residents, as footage filmed on Monday shows.

"As part of today's mission, Russian military servicemen delivered several thousand humanitarian aid packages to the residents of Raqqa and our military doctors are ready to provide high qulity medical help to all residents in need," Vladimir Varnavsky, a defense ministry officer said.

Children were seen cheering for Russian soldiers as they were unloading the humanitarian aid from the trucks with residents lined up to receive their share of the aid.

Raqqa was recaptured from the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) by the US-backed Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces in 2017.

Following the withdrawal of the US-backed forces, Russian-Turkish joint patrol missions began upon an agreement reached between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Sochi on October 22.
