China imposed a 10-year fishing ban in large parts of Asia’s longest river starting January 1, 2020. The move steps up an existing seasonal fishing ban to protect the 6,300km (3,915-mile) Yangtze River, where commercial fishing had already been banned for three to four months each spring since 2003. The new ban will affect an estimated 280,000 fishermen, and China’s government has allocated funds for financial support and vocational training for people in the industry.
