One overlooked possibility in the hunt for the rationale behind Donald Trump’s sudden assassination of a top Iranian military leader — after decades of American foreign policy had repeatedly gauged such an act too risky for the potential consequences — could be as simple as something we’ve seen domestically from Trump since the day he was inaugurated. He could just have been pissed off at Qassem Soleimani for making fun of him.
For all of the reports saying that Trump didn’t know who Soleimani was, or that the Quds commander was relatively unknown, it seems unlikely that Trump was unaware of Soleimani’s presence and influence in the middle east, given the input of his many anti-Iran advisors past and present, such as the notoriously hawkish John Bolton.
But even considering the counsel of others seems somewhat outside Trump’s wheelhouse, which is what leads me to believe that he may have just been angry about a tit-for-tat he had with Soleimani on social media after disastrously pulling out of the nuclear deal with Iran engineered by the previous administration.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani responded to Trump reneging on the deal with a statement intended to underline the seriousness of Trump’s actions:
America should know that peace with Iran is the mother of all peace, and war with Iran is the mother of all wars.”
