Solid State L-04 Type of Crystals, Defects in Solids, Frenkel & Schottky Defect CL-133 for Neet Chemistry

There are four types of crystals: covalent, ionic, metallic, and molecular. Each type has a different type of connection, or bond, between its atoms. The type of atoms and the arrangement of bonds dictate what type of crystal is formed.

However, these defects typically involve at most a few extra or missing atoms. ... A vacancy (or pair of vacancies in an ionic solid) is sometimes called a Schottky defect. Interstitial defects are atoms that occupy a site in the crystal structure at which there is usually not an atom.

A Schottky defect is a type of point defect in a crystal lattice named after Walter H. Schottky. In non-ionic crystals, it means a lattice valency defect. In ionic crystals, this point defect forms when oppositely charged ions leave their lattice sites, creating vacancies.

A Frenkel defect or dislocation defect is a type of point defect in crystalline solids named after its discoverer Yakov Frenkel. The defect forms when an atom or smaller ion leaves its place in the lattice, creating a vacancy, and becomes an interstitial by lodging in a nearby location.
