US President Donald Trump said the break-in at the US embassy in Iraq would "never ever be a Benghazi", when he arrived at his New Year's Eve reception at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida on Tuesday.

He referred to the 2012 attacks in Libya which resulted in the death of the US ambassador and three other servicemen.

Earlier, protesters angry at US airstrikes on Iranian-backed militia in Iraq and Syria managed to breach the defences of the embassy compound.

At least 25 fighters from the Kataib Hezbollah were killed during the strikes, which the US said was in retaliation for the death of an American contractor in Kirkuk.

He also said he would not wish to enter a war with Iran, who are recognised supporters of Kataib Hezbollah.

In other comments, Trump said North Korean leader Kim Jong-un was "a man of his word" despite ending a suspension on nuclear and long-range missile tests agreed during talks with the US.
