The human brain has the ability to consciously process about 40 bits of information per second. But unconsciously, this number is closer to 11 million! Our brains unwillingly make decisions based on our history, background, or experiences. And the most recurrent, yet most harmful one: bias.

My name is Hiya Shah, and I am an AP student at Central Peel Secondary School.

In today’s society, unconscious bias is a real problem, and it doesn't only affect the way we think of people because of their background, it creates a prejudice against people based on their gender, status, ability and looks. Our beliefs on a particular topic cause us to see things from a set viewpoint, without knowing. This bias not only affects our well-being, but can ignite hate, violence, and division in society.

So how do we break the bias?

The best way is to turn the unconsciousness into consciousness. Become aware of the bias you hold for people or things. Embrace these stereotypes, and then dismantle them by talking it out with friends or colleagues. This causes us to realize our own biases and improves the relationships we have with people around us.

Though this can help in taking down the social barriers we have in the community, many stereotypes will remain unconsciously because of human nature. So instead of denying your bias, own it.

Thanks for Watching!
