What is consciousness? It is nothing more than pure awareness and intelligence. It is information and its purest form and something that can never be hurt and doesn't die. We all use our consciousness to interact within the larger conscious system, which is the totality of our universe. The origin of consciousness is unknown. Maybe God created it, maybe not. We can never know for sure.

But we do know that all of our individual consciousness, which is us, sprang from one huge monolithic block of consciousness that has existed for a long time. Tom Campbell explains it best in his Big Theory of Everything books. To me, it's the best explanation of reality and how the universe came to be. Who created the universe you might ask? In a sense, the larger conscious system created it so it could grow and evolve. This is how the universe came to be. This is where the universe came from in the first place. Remember, consciousness is everything. We are all one and infinite love and awareness is the only truth - everything else is illusion.
