Budget surplus is 'cooked'

Budget surplus is 'cooked' As the coronavirus continues to take a toll on the global economy, Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell says the promised 2019-20 surplus is “cooked”.

Sky News understands the government will also look to implement a “measured” stimulus ahead of the May budget as concerns swirl about the 2020-21 surplus.

“It’s been put to me should the travel go on for months, the surplus for 2019-20 and then there will be questions about the surplus for 2020-21,” Mr Clennell said.

“The prime minister we know last week spoke about a stimulus … what has been put to me is that stimulus will occur before the May budget.

“It won’t just be a budget announcement.”
