Antipsychotics for ADHD: Dangerous Drugs Being Prescribed to Kids

Children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are 4x more likely than the general population to be prescribed an anti-psychotic medication to manage symptoms, according to a new study just published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The news is particularly disturbing as the antipsychotic drug use was shown to be highest in the youngest children in the study who were diagnosed with ADHD, those between 3-5 years of age. Antipsychotics such as Risperidone are know to produce significant health risks in young people, including weight gain, diabetes, and even unexpected death.

Typically 85% of children with ADHD have increased theta wave activity in the front of the brain -- the "sleepy" brain wave patterns that trigger impulsivity, restlessness and attention issues.
