Bracing For Your Lifts : GET FAT!

Bracing For Your Lifts : GET FAT! You should be getting fat in the gym.

Weird concept right?

I don't mean you're actually body composition, but learning to breath through your stomach.

Breathing and bracing, is crucial for your success to stabilize and maximize power for a lift.

To stabilize a lift, you have to get fat!

It’s the one time in a gym someone will tell you to “GET FAT”

This means breathing through the stomach, pulling as much air in as you possibly can, then bracing like someone is going to punch you in the stomach.

I like to do a drill where I'll have athletes take a deep breath, watching form the side, I'll wait to see if their chest or the stomach expands.

Try it...

Did your chest come out? Shoulders back? Lower back tighten up?

This is a clear sign you're breathing into your lungs, not into your diaphragm.

This already is putting added tension on the lower back and inability to brace before your lift.

The next step is teaching athletes to hold that breath throughout a lift.

Don’t loose the breath on the way up, or on the way down.

This will destabilize all that pressure you’ve worked for to make the lift.

Another drill, my favorite, can be done with a weight belt.
