*why they need to do the abdominal punching or gut-punching training?*
Because boxer is going to get hit in the stomach in the ring! abdominal punching training is actually good training to make sure you can take a punch to the mid-section. You learn how and when to tighten up and relax. The same reason boxers used old-time medicine balls ( hard rubber balls thrown against their stomachs) it built up resistance to punches and muscle fitness to their fitness. it does makes the abdominal muscles stronger
the other reason is boxer getting hit is part of the game, and it's easier and safer to train getting hit in the stomach than it is to practice getting hit in the head, understanding how to absorb a hit in the stomach is a great skill to have as a fighter.
once again, do not imitate this training, this training is totally harmless for the professional boxer, but for the people who never train like this before is damaged.
