Motivation - why nowadays students lack motivation to learn?

Motivation is an important factor in achieving anything in life, especially when learning new things. Today's comfortable lives in developed nations and the internet environment is hardly a motivator, often times, the wrong motivators. Everything is at our fingertips, thus, we may feel that's all we need to know or learn. Should we go back to past difficult times just to get an ounce of good motivation? Entertainment is the only thing that motivates most people, especially students. Who's at fault? The internet? science? technology? the educational system?
