Amputation refers to the surgical removal of the part of the body. The amputation levels vary according to the injury and is important to consider because the ability of the rest of the limb gets affected. Different amputation levels are discussed in this General Surgery lecture.
On the basis of location i.e. below the Knee Region, at the Knee Joint, below the Hip Joint, or at the hip, the Lower Limb amputations are categorized as hemipelvectomy, hip disarticulation, very short above knee, short above knee, medium above knee, long above knee, knee disarticulation, short below knee, standard below knee, Symes, hind foot amputation, and toe amputation.
Amputation is indicated when there is a dead limb such as gangrene, deadly limb such as arteriovenous fistula, or dead loss limb i.e. paralysis. The procedure of distal and transmetatarsal amputation is also made understandable.
It is also discussed in this surgery lecture that the above-knee amputation surgical technique and below knee operation are the two major amputation choices. The discussion continues on through-knee amputation.
Why we do an amputation, what are the indications of amputation, and how we do the amputation. All are discussed. Now what to do after amputation, is something important to learn about in medical training. The postoperative care of an amputee requires opiate pain relief, care of the good limb, and exercise and mobilization.
Some of its complications are also explained at the end of the lecture. Do watch this lecture and other lectures in surgery to avoid any ambiguity while you are performing amputation or any other surgical procedure as a physician in operation theatre.
