Bolivia: MAS select exiled leader Evo Morales as campaign chief

Movement for Socialism (MAS) selected Bolivia's deposed leader Evo Morales as its campaign chief for forthcoming elections at their conference in Cochabamba on Saturday.

Morales, who fled in Mexico last November, will not be standing in the 2020 elections, although he will is expected to co-ordinate strategy from afar. It is thought that he will move from Cuba, where he is currently receiving medical treatment, to Argentina once left-wing ally Alberto Fernandez assumes the presidency.

Party members will also select candidates to become president and vice president, who will be named at a later date.

Bolivia has been ruled by a de facto government ever since Morales resigned following disputed elections. The resulting power vacuum saw the country descend into violence.
