I was watching a mix martial arts (mma) video on YouTube regarding a tweet between a mma fighter by the name of Mike Perry & an actor / martial artist Michael Jai White. During their back and forth exchange, Mike Perry (a person of European heritage) referred to Michael Jai White (a person of African heritage) as a "nigga". Now, in my opinion, MP`s comment was NOT racially motivated; but was in keeping with the vernacular of our present day; especially as it relates to the hip hop community or rap music.
The reality is the wealth of most, if not all rappers is due to "white suburban" youth purchasing and supporting black rappers. This is a fact.
I`m not aware of MP`s music taste, but there is a very high probability he listens to rap music & has been influenced by the lyrics of those rappers. With most rap songs, one cannot escape the usage of the word "nigga, niggas, niggaz"; which is constantly utilized to refer to other blacks (whether favourably or not) or even non-blacks. The more you listen to any kind of genre of music (movies, etc.), the more likely it is to influence the way you think and the manner in which you speak.
I`m not justifying MP`s use of the word "nigga", I am simply saying that it is understandable; especially when most, if not all blacks within the hip hop or rap music community refer themselves or others as niggas/niggaz.
Another, mma figher by the name of Angela Hill (a person of African heritage) took offense to MP`s comment. My only response to Angela Hill is that I hope she takes as much offense to that word (NIGGA) when it is being said by one black person to another black person. If it is not appropriate for European person to say it, it should not be appropriate for an African person to say it either. The level of hypocrisy is so apparent to me.
The bottom line for me is that people of African ancestry should NOT refer to one another in a such degrading way, but I have observed that I come from among a people who demonstrate such little respect for themselves and their own community. It is for this simple reason that we are viewed as the lowest among all the tribal groups on the Earth. Nothing will change about that, until we change.
