Permaculture Principle #12: Creatively Use & Respond to Change

This song was filmed in the gully at Melliodora, where a bushfire had swept through a few months earlier, showing the regeneration of the forest and its incredible ability to adapt and respond to change. With our climate and biosphere changing at an unprecedented rate, some ecosystems may never be able to fully restore themselves to their previous incarnations, however the principle of change suggests that nature will always find a way to adapt to new situations. In permaculture design, it's a good idea to try and predict the changes that are ahead and plan accordingly. For instance, The Food Forest in South Australia recently replaced many of their stone fruit and apple trees with more heat and drought-tolerant species such as jujube and carob, in anticipation of their climate becoming drier and hotter as time goes on. Responding to change requires a degree of improvisation, as you can never truly predict what is going to happen. Think about it as learning to dance to a piece of music you've never heard before!
