Additional note @ 1:31:20 ish -- while people are sitting down and researching as you kick down the door, they get stuck in a hellwar with you.
An early hellwar for any other build rather than an awake research rush, means that your research gets semi-permanently crippled; in contrast, you're already researching well, and you will continue to research well as your cap accrues non-busy mages.
