F1 in 2020 “Will Be a Game of Chicken”
As has been reported here a few times already, this year is going to be tricky for the teams in F1 as they have to develop the 2020 car and keep improving it while picking the right time to start switching their resources into the development of the 2021 car, all without suffering too much in 2020.
Renault executive Marcin Budkowski has shed some more light on finding this balance.
“I think it is going to be a big dilemma. We have a plan, I am sure everybody has, and that plan is to shorten development into the season. It is not less development it is just more concentrated development."
“It is easy to say this now because the season hasn’t started, but at the front it could be quite interesting if the top three are fighting for the championship and it’s going to be a close fight. It is going to be interesting seeing who pulls the plug first and jumps to 2021. Are Ferrari, for example, willing to switch earlier and take a risk that another team will win?"
“To be honest it is the same throughout the field. If it is a close fight for fourth, it is going to be a game of chicken about who blinks first, and who transitions first. But I think it is important we don’t get distracted because 2021 is such a big challenge and the margin of progression on the new set of rules is big.”
Alpha Tauri Upgraded From Junior Team to Sister Team
Alpha Tauri, the rebranded version of Toro Rosso has more than its name and livery changing in 2020. According to Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko the team is to become Red Bull's sister team and will thus receive more resources when compared to its previous status as Red Bull's junior team. Marko revealed this by saying:
“With this name change and all this publicity and the funds going into promotion, the demand for resources has clearly increased. There is a transformation and an upgrading from junior to sister team. Everything that is permitted and as far as our capacities are sufficient is also provided at Alpha Tauri."
Alonso May Find All Doors Closed to F1
Fernando Alonso is one of those drivers who many feel didn't quite live up to his full potential and that maybe he should have won more than two driver's championships.
He left Formula 1 after enduring the doomed McLaren-Honda partnership but rumours have started swirling recently that he could return to the grid again in 2021 as the massive overhaul of the regulations are going to bring about a lot of change.
However, if former F1 driver, David Coulthard is to be believed then Alonso might not be able to secure an F1 seat even if he wanted to. He explained this by saying:
“I know he wants to come back, but I don’t think he has a choice. I don’t think Mercedes needs him or wants him. I don’t think Ferrari needs him or wants him. I don’t think Red Bull needs him or wants him. Where’s he going to go? Back to McLaren?”
He further reasoned that Alonso's time to achieve anything more in F1 might already be over.
“For me, Alonso is one of the most talented drivers ever in Formula 1, really talented like Hamilton, Schumacher or Senna. Everything he’s driven has been in a hurry. But everyone has their moment and maybe it has come for him.”

- Haas driver Kevin Magnussen is "confident" the team will "have a good car” and will approach the pre-season testing in a "professional" manner "independent" of his "expectations"
- His teammate Romain Grosjean has revealed that Haas has "learned a lot from 2019, when testing went well, but the rest of the season" didn't
- Mercedes' technical director James Allison has revealed that he is "expecting a three-way fight from the outset" of the new season
- The aeroscreen that was originally designed for F1 has been fully deployed in Indy with former F1 driver Takuma Sato praising it by saying he "felt really safe and protected and the visibility" being "better than" he "expected"
- His teammate Graham Rahal chimed in by recounting how he followed "someone through a puddle and a ton of water came up on the Aeroscreen" but that "it dissipated immediately"
