If Australia removes coal-fired power it will 'descend into a third world nation'

If Australia removes coal-fired power it will 'descend into a third world nation' NSW One Nation Leader Mark Latham says Australians should recognise that the economy would take a hit of 25 per cent on GDP growth if politicians adopt a policy of “net zero emissions by 2050".

A recent poll conducted by the Australian National University shows support for coal among Coalition voters has dropped from 72 to 57 per cent, with support across the board plunging to 37 per cent.

That is despite 80 per cent of Australia’s electricity on Tuesday came from coal according to Sky News host Paul Murray.

Fellow Sky News host Rita Panahi said if you “strip that 80 per cent out of the grid, we are [then] descending into a third world nation”.

“We know renewables and batteries aren’t going to be a replacement for that 80 per cent,” she said.

“Unless you’ve got something that can replace it like nuclear [power] then you’re in a world of trouble”.
