Jakarta was once again the victim of widespread flooding on Tuesday, with many residents seeking refuge away from the city. Caused by the overflow of a nearby river following heavy rain, streets were mostly empty as officials took stock of the damage and a few brave individuals helped others cross the deep floodwaters.

All transportation was brought to a standstill, bringing quiet to a usually bustling city, and the day was declared a work holiday for most.

"We must just leave it to God and always be thankful," said a local woman, aged 50, smiling as she waded through the chambers of her home that are now full of water.

Since the beginning of the year, heavy rainfall and cyclones have claimed the lives of dozens in Indonesia's capital city, and the cycle doesn't appear to be ending any time soon. Many say they have never seen weather like it, and rains earlier in January were the largest ever recorded in the past 25 years.
