Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Iran would "never go to the negotiation table in a position of weakness" in response to the Trump administration's 'maximum pressure' campaign, during a press conference in Tehran on Sunday.

"All the purposes of the US are to bring the government to the negotiation table, through maximum pressure and while people are in a tough path," he said. "We will never go to the negotiation table in a position of weakness."

Rouhanni also addressed recent rumours about his resignation, and the conversation he had with Ayatollah Khamenei.

"In the first months that the election was held, there was something in my mind for some reason. I expressed that to the leader [Ayatollah Khamenei] that this government has come to work and if he thought, for any reason, that another person or government would be able to work better, I was ready to resign and he vehemently rejected it and said that no," he said.
