WILD CRASH SCENE: Firefighters hustle to free man trapped underneath rolled-over vehicle... also extricating entrapped female... COTUIT – [DEVELOPING] – Watch in the following HN Video as firefighters go all hands on deck, hustling to save a man pinned underneath a rolled-over vehicle, with the another passenger also entrapped inside of the same vehicle.
The crash happened at about 11:15 p.m. along Route 130 near the intersection with Route 28.
The male was trapped underneath the wreckage, with the overturned roof of the vehicle pressing down upon his chest. Firefighters used airbags, posts, a chainsaw, and the Jaws of Life, among other things, to carefully lift the vehicle off the man's chest. It took a while, and the man was conscious during the extrication, obviously in pain. Once extricated, he was rushed into a nearby ambulance and transported to a temporary landing zone between the Mashpee police and fire departments. He was then airlifted to an off-Cape trauma center.
Firefighters then focused on the female passenger who was still entrapped inside of the vehicle. Firefighters cut through the glass and carefully lifted her onto an awaiting stretcher. She was then transported via ambulance to trauma center in Providence, Rhode Island.
The extent of the injuries and the patient's current conditions were unknown at the time of this report.
The reason for the vehicle leaving the roadway and rolling onto its roof was also unknown at the time of this report. The Barnstable Police Department is handling the crash scene investigation and HN will provide official updates as they become available.
