Satan Cast out of Heaven: Why and When does this occur? Satan's angels are cast out with him

In Revelation 12, the Bible teaches that as a result of the war in heaven, Satan and his angels were cast out of heaven and thrown to the earth. But, when does this occur? Why does this occur? Also, why does salvation occur when Satan is cast out of heaven?
