Farewell Union Jack! British flag is removed on Brexit night outside European Council in Brussels

The red, white and blue national emblem of the United Kingdom was taken out of the line-up outside the European Council in the Belgian capital this evening.



Similar removals took place at other EU buildings and the blue European flag was taken down from a pole outside the UK mission in Brussels.



A few hours later, on the stroke of midnight in Paris, Berlin and Brussels, the U.K. will leave the bloc after 47 years.

The removal of the Union Jack also happened at the EU Council building in Brussels, where prime ministers and heads of states gather for "EU summits".
